Do You Want Another Email From Twitter?
Posted by allison n
I love being connected to my social media tools, whether it’s my Facebook profile, Facebook page, Twitter, LinkedIN, Pinterest or videos I candidly make. Moreover, I like to manage my relationship with these online vehicles on my terms, which is why I like that these social tools give me the option to control my notification settings.
Yesterday, Twitter announced it plans to email all users a Weekly Digest of most relevant Tweets and stories shared by people we’re connect to and most engaging Tweets seen by people we’re connected to.
Is this what I want?
Do I need a Weekly Digest?
News and information moves so quickly on Twitter; will the majority of content in my Weekly Digest be irrelevant by the time I open the email?
I am still trying to determine the value-add. I’m mulling it over!
Yet, here are some reasons I think it may add value:
- I can catch up on stories my connections, and even leaders I follow, found relevant that week
- I can learn about issues my connections care about
- I can engage with Tweets retroactively and reignite online dialogue on the subject
What are your thoughts on Twitter’s new Weekly Digest feature?
Not sure you’re ready for more emails? Take these steps:
1. Login to your Twitter account
2. Go to your Settings
3. Click “Notifications” on the left-hand-side
4. Unclick the box next to “Weekly digest of Stories and Tweets from my network”
5. Click “Save Changes”
3 Things I Liked in Social Media, Week ending April 22.
Posted by allison n
You know what I noticed? Lately, I tend to share insights in threes. For example, my 3 Things I Like in Social Media weekly round-up and my recent 3 Types of Pinterest Contests post. Strange? Well, as long as it’s adding value to you (my fantastic readers), it’s good in my book.
Lets get down to business! Here are the three things I liked in social media this week.
1. Klout for Good – Klout allows us to give back and it’s easy. In support of Earth Month (April) and Earth Day (April 22) Klout has provided us easy ways for us to support the World Wildlife Fund. I am truly enjoying the philanthropic features from Klout and the opportunity for us to make a difference online.
2. Choose a Cover Image for your Pinterest Board – I love this! You now have the ability to select the cover image that will appear on each or your Pinterest boards. The steps are simple. (1) Click on one of your boards, (2) hover-over your favorite pin on that particular board, (3) when you see “Set Board Cover.” You can also do this from your main Pinterest account page. Just hover-over a board until you see “Edit Board Cover.”
3. Analytics for LinkedIN Groups – This isn’t new but it’s an amenity of LinkedIN I recently started to appreciate. Whether you’re a group moderator or weighing the benefits and drawbacks of joining one group over another, the analytics provide insights on the demographics of group members, how active the group is and its growth over time. Additionally, you can “share” group stats with your friends and fans on Facebook, LinkedIN and Twitter. Why not celebrate statistical milestones!

Do You Auto DM? 7 Reasons People Will Unfollow You.
Posted by allison n
Twitter auto direct messages (DMs)…what are your thoughts? Unnecessary? Annoying? Helpful? Valuable?
I can’t help but notice that over 95% of the auto DMs I receive when I follow someone new are intrusive, annoying and have a “spam-esque” aura. In fact, the team behind Optify ran a week-long test and found their unfollow rate increased 245% week over week. Before leveraging the auto DM, their unfollow rate was 16.5%. The week auto DM was implemented, their unfollow rate lifted to 40.5%. There are some learnings here. Unfollow rates don’t jump that high week over week unless you’ve made a drastic change in your Twitter strategy and in this case, leveraging auto DM.
Since there is no sign auto DMs are going away and if you’re using the auto DM functionality (for whatever reason), here are some knowledge points to keep in-mind. We’re friends and I don’t want you to lose followers.
Seven Reasons People Will Unfollow You:
- You offer unsolicited advisement and solutions.
- You overly cross-promote. You don’t need to encourage the person to “Like” your Facebook Page, subscribe to your blog, connect with you on LinkedIN and subscribe to your YouTube channel.
- You ask your new follower to retweet your messages for a chance to win [insert ridiculous prize].
- You tell your new follower if he/she retweets you, you’ll retweet them in return.
- You try to convert your new follower to make a purchase. Example, “My book just hit the shelves! You can buy it on Amazon for $12.99 [link]“
- You insert a Biblical, political or philosophical message.
- You offer a promotion for a product, service and/or event entry.
Open forum! Share examples of some auto DMs you’ve received. We can cringe and laugh about it.
