3 Things I Liked in Social Media, Week ending July 29.

It’s been an exciting Olympic weekend! As I write this, the U.S. is in 2nd for most medals won. Let’s hear it for Team USA! There are so many ways to stay dialed-in to the London Olympics via social media or mobile.
1. Social media etiquette – Witnessing a snafu in social media etiquette is like nails on a chalk board for me. I’ll openly admit, I’m not perfect, but at least there are articles like this that help me stay in sync on a social media etiquette front. Some of the tips are: respect ownership of digital content, pay attention to the bad and stay active etc.
2. Olympics sentiment projected onto London’s Eye – I love this! Tweets about the Olympic games are analyzed on sentiment level, positive or negative. The live stats are projected on to London’s Eye in a pie chart fashion. The yellow lights represent positive and the purple lights represent negative. Here’s an infographic of how it works!
3. Twitter getting a reality TV show? – I friggin’ hope so. According to CNET, it’s an idea floating around between Twitter and Hollywood execs. I am usually not one to indulge in reality TV, but this is a show I would watch!

Two Types of Pinterest Scavenger Hunts
Posted by allison n
Scavenger hunts. They’re fun, right?
The most recent one I was involved with was for a friend’s party; it was a fresh reminder of how fun it can be! The scavenger hunt was old school, pen…paper…envelopes etc. It was fun nonetheless, but let’s take it a step further. It’s 2012 after-all.
A Pinterest scavenger hunt is a ripe opportunity for:
- Engaging with fans on Pinterest and Twitter via commenting, retweeting and replying
- Gaining new fans and followers
- Wider brand reach
- Increased traffic to your website
How to Launch a Pinterest Scavenger Hunt
First thing to consider, what’s the hook for participants? A gift card to use online or in-store? A high-value item? An experience for the winner and their friends?
Secondly, before you launch your Pinterest scavenger hunt; make sure you provide specific directions for pinners. For example:
1. A requirement is that all participants must have a Pinterest account
2. Pinners must create a new board and only ONE board per pinner
3. Title the board as [Insert board title for campaign/scavenger hunt]
4. Suggest pinners use specific hashtags, so pins have a better chance of showing up in search results
5. Request pinners to send an email with a link to their Pinterest board, so the Community Manager can keep track of participants
Two Types of Pinterest Scavenger Hunts to Consider
1. Clue based scavenger hunt -
- Use the homepage or a hosted landing page on your site to promote the scavenger hunt.
- Promote the 1st clue inviting pinners to find the next item(s) on one of the site’s product/recipe/landing pages.
- Each page will have a clue leading to the next page. Ask participants to pin the landing page to their scavenger hunt Pinterest board and tweet the pin using a hashtag.
- Pinners will email the Community Manager once they completed the scavenger hunt.
2. Check-off list scavenger hunt -
The folks at Little Farm in the Big City launched a check-off list scavenger hunt, which is just as fun! It can be implemented in a similar fashion as a clue based scavenger hunt.
- Use the homepage or a hosted landing page on your site to promote the scavenger hunt.
- Create a list of items pinners must find on your website.
- Ask participants to pin the found items to their scavenger hunt Pinterest board and tweet the pin using a hashtag.
- Pinners will email the Community Manager once they completed the scavenger hunt.
